Bone broth is a great supplement to your dog’s diet. It is rich in nutrients like glycine, glucosamine, and collagen, and can increase hydration and help improve joint health and skin condition. We spoke with one of our COAST+RANGE Nutrition Experts, Leith Henry, to share what she looks for when buying bone broth for her dog Hana or one of her many canine clients.
Sourcing - Leith looks for organic and grass-fed bone broth that is sourced from the U.S. She avoids bone broth that comes in a box sitting on a shelf in the grocery store (that is for flavoring recipes) and instead heads to the frozen food aisle for bone broth with greater medicinal benefits. Ingredients - Leith likes to match her bone broth animal source with the unique needs of the dog, as each type of bone broth can help different conditions:
For hydration – she likes to rotate across different animal sources
For joint health – she prefers chicken, beef, or fish (in that order)
For skin health – fish and beef are her picks
She recommends avoiding bone broth that contains spices and onion as those ingredients can be problematic for some dogs.
How is it prepared - Leith prefers bone broths with longer cook times at lower temperatures because they provide greater benefit for your dog. In general, the bigger the bone the longer the cook time:
- 24-48 hours for beef-based bone broths
- 24 hours or more for chicken-based bone broths
- 16-24 hours for fish-based bone broths
How much to feed? Every dog is different, so consult your veterinarian. A general rule of thumb is 1oz of bone broth per 10lbs of your dog’s weight.
