The Incredible Edible Egg (or is it)?
- Waste from egg hatcheries – this is typically liquid from eggs that didn’t hatch
- Graders – eggs that get rejected by supermarkets because they don’t meet their standards
- Breakers – typically egg whites from bakery operations using just the yolks
Because these eggs are not required to be refrigerated, or properly handled, they are not fit for human consumption – so why are they fit for our pets? It’s because (sadly) the pet food industry operates for the bottom line, not for the health and well-being of our pets.
917 DOG FOODS AND TREATS CONTAINING INEDIBLE EGG PRODUCT
We checked the AAFCO Official Regulations and found that it is totally legal for pet food companies to use inedible egg product. There is even an ingredient definition in the regulations allowing the use of egg product: "A product obtained from egg graders, egg breakers, and/or hatchery operations” (notice they don’t mention the waste part in hatchery operations). We also went to the leading e-commerce pet food site and searched the term “egg product” and found a staggering 917 dog foods and treats using inedible egg product!
