DOES YOUR DOG'S FOOD CONTAIN HATCHERY WASTE?

The Incredible Edible Egg (or is it)?

THE BENEFITS OF EGG
Eggs are an amazing source of nutrition for humans and pets and are the most easily digested source of protein (a perfect 1.0 on a digestibility scale from 1.0 to 0). At COAST+RANGE we use human-grade egg yolks to naturally deliver essential vitamins and minerals our dogs need like selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12, zinc, iron, and copper. Eggs are also how we deliver high levels of quality animal protein in our foods—unlike our pet industry competitors who use less digestible, and less expensive, protein from soy and peas to deliver “high protein” dog food.

ARE YOU FEEDING HATCHERY WASTE TO YOUR DOG?
One of our procurement managers at COAST+RANGE received an email the other day from a supplier (one we don’t use) saying he could cut our egg costs in half if we switched from human-grade egg yolks to something called “egg product”. When he sent over the product specification one thing stood out to our manager – the words “INEDIBLE – NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION”.  We did some Googling and found that “egg product” consists of three types of egg rejects:
  • Waste from egg hatcheries – this is typically liquid from eggs that didn’t hatch
  • Graders – eggs that get rejected by supermarkets because they don’t meet their standards
  • Breakers – typically egg whites from bakery operations using just the yolks

Because these eggs are not required to be refrigerated, or properly handled, they are not fit for human consumption – so why are they fit for our pets? It’s because (sadly) the pet food industry operates for the bottom line, not for the health and well-being of our pets.

917 DOG FOODS AND TREATS CONTAINING INEDIBLE EGG PRODUCT

We checked the AAFCO Official Regulations and found that it is totally legal for pet food companies to use inedible egg product. There is even an ingredient definition in the regulations allowing the use of egg product: "A product obtained from egg graders, egg breakers, and/or hatchery operations” (notice they don’t mention the waste part in hatchery operations). We also went to the leading e-commerce pet food site and searched the term “egg product” and found a staggering 917 dog foods and treats using inedible egg product!

Unfortunately, in the pet food industry you get what you pay for and you need to be wary of what is in your dog’s food. If you are looking for a healthy alternative to your dog’s current food—one made with quality ingredients like human-grade egg yolks—try a FREE sample of COAST+RANGE. Samples are just $1 and ship anywhere in US for a flat $3 HERE.
